Leading lights in Laurels

With 24 greyhounds left in the Cashmans Irish Laurels, in football terms, it would be fair to say that it's 'squeaky bum time'. But with the draw separating most of the major contenders, it's quite possible that the majority of the principals will still be there after Saturday night's quarter-final heats.

There's little doubt that it's the concluding heat which has most people talking but the three which proceed that are no forgone conclusions either. Sevenheads Bay N/A has been one of the most consistent greyhounds in this year's Laurels and he has been rewarded with a pleasing draw in the opening heat, despite having Oran Classic N/A to contend with.

Racing from trap 2, he should be leading around the opening two bends, if his recent sectionals are anything to go by. And while he was caught late home last week, there's nothing with Kiowa Myth's N/A pace from halfway in here. He is taken to turn over Oran Classic, who isn't favoured by the draw, and Forest Boss N/A.

All eyes will be on Boherna Best N/A in the second quarter-final and the way Owen McKenna's star has been running, he'll take some stopping. However, his main threat may very well come from his kennel companion Faypoint Dec, who is also unbeaten so far in the stake.

Primarily because of the draw, Faypoint Dec gets the verdict as there is the possibility that Boherna Best may get held up at some stage and any hiccups can't be afforded here. Chicken Supper can join the McKenna pair in the semi-finals.

The third quarter-final on Saturday is probably the most open of the heats but it's quite likely that Bar Blackstone N/A will go off favourite. This year's St. Leger winner has the gears to make all here and he should have enough to hold off the badly drawn Cabra Cool N/A and Cashen Zig.

And in that mouth-watering fourth quarter-final, it's possible that it could be something like 5/2 the field. Slip The Lark looks like going off at the head of the market but despite shining on a couple of occasions during this year's Irish Derby, he doesn't look the dog of last year.

His kennel companion Tyrur Giovanni N/A could provide the answer here and a decent break would make him very hard to beat in this heat. He still has a major chance to win this Classic on his best form and he should have enough in this heat to beat Kiowa Myth and Skip One. N/A
