Course specialist strikes again

Mr Wolf brought the house down at Pontefract as he stormed to an eighth course success in the Ladies Day On Wednesday 4th August Handicap.

The nine-year-old sprinter already has a race named after him in his honour at the West Yorkshire track and he could well return to his happy hunting ground later in the season before time is called on his racing career.

Mr Wolf (5-2 favourite), part-owned by Andrew Turton and his former trainer David Barker, made all the running as he toppled King Of Swords by half a length to complete doubles on the day for jockey Paul Hanagan and trainer John Quinn.

"We don't know about retiring him. There are three or four races here for him," said Quinn.

"He's won this year so that's grand. It would be great for him to retire on a win and he just loves it here."

Hanagan had earlier struck on Autumn Riches (5-4) in the Keepmoat Delivering Community Regeneration Maiden Stakes.

That win secured Hanagan the top jockey award at the Yorkshire Summer Racing Festival and Mark Johnston the trainer prize.

Quinn had earlier saddled New Planet to make a winning debut in the Welcome To Yorkshire Action Packed Outdoors Maiden Stakes.

Backed from 11-2 to 7-2 on course, the Majestic Missile youngster justified the strong support in sterling fashion.

His rider, 5lb claimer Ian Brennan, completed a near 42-1 double on Stevie Gee (17-2) in the Family Day On 15th August Handicap.

Kieren Fallon riding Mabait and Daragh O'Donohoe on Rio De La Plata treated racegoers to a dead-heat in the feature Sky Bet Supporting The Yorkshire Racing Festival Pomfret Stakes.

Rio De La Plata (5-2) and Mabait (5-1) could not be split after a terrific duel in the closing stages.

"The other horse was coming back at me but I thought I'd got it," said Fallon.

"He ran a great race and was back to form after his run at Newmarket."
