Sixteen of these are making their handicap debuts. It would be easy to harbour reservations about AWAKEN when she has a big weight and ran moderately on her comeback in the Nell Gwyn. However, this fast ground is the key to her, on which she was runner-up in last year's Albany at this meeting and a good fourth in the Group 2 Rockfel, while going beyond 7f for the first time is worth exploring when her dam won over 1m2f. The two Gosden fillies have been kept away from the bright lights but Seet could be destined for Group races, while Symbol Of Majesty had a Coronation Stakes entry when there were excuses on her handicap debut. It was surprising to see Zooming (second choice) back at 6f last time when she had seen her race out so well over the 7f of a Guineas trial, and this is a good day to try 1m. In truth, with such a high percentage of this field open to career bests, cases can be made for 20 or more.[Alistair Jones] Show less
Spotlight: Irish Oaks entrant who won a maiden at Naas (10.3f, good) in April on her second start and coped fine with the drop to 1m when following up at Killarney (good; won going away) at the expense of a subsequent winner; this is a huge hike in class but she's promising and the booking of Oisin Murphy is a statement of intent.
Spotlight: Half-sister to five winners including the high-class middle-distance performer Kalpana; made her debut in only April and has since comfortably won minor races at Wolverhampton (8.6f) and Doncaster (1m, good to firm); while there's always a fear that this huge field on handicap debut will be a culture shock, her pedigree and progress suggest she could be heading for Group races.
Spotlight: Unchallenged in her first two races on the AW at about 1m and nothing went right from a bad draw on handicap debut at Thirsk (1m, good; 9-2); others have achieved heaps more but that's reflected in her mark and she's in the right hands to do better.
Spotlight: One of two runners for Joseph O'Brien; has come from well behind at the Curragh (7f/1m, good) in both her handicaps, scraping home by the skin of her teeth in the latest; this weight would be borderline for Dylan Browne McMonagle who has ridden this filly on her last two starts but now partners her stablemate.
Spotlight: Took the notable scalp of Classic heroine Precise in a Fairyhouse 6f maiden last season (good); found 5.5f too sharp on return and was then a closing fourth on handicap debut at the Curragh where the 7f proved well within reach; so too might this 1m; respected.
Spotlight: Yet another runner who produced career-best form in winning last time out, in her case a Class 4 at Nottingham (extended 1m; good to soft; fine on faster); a 9lb rise only goes to show how emphatic a performance that was; trainer won this in 2019 and 2020.
Spotlight: Maintained her unbeaten record when beating male opposition in a 1m handicap at Newmarket that's worked out well (1m, good); it was then always going to be tough for her in the 1,000 Guineas for which she went off 80-1; only 3lb above her winning mark, she's one to bear in mind.
Spotlight: Narrowly prevailed in two 1m novices (AW/good to firm) and got messed about in a muddling race when a beaten favourite (at odds of 6-5) on handicap debut at Wolverhampton (8.6f); has kept a low profile thus far but interesting that she once held a Group 1 Coronation Stakes entry; intriguing runner.
Spotlight: 6f maiden winner last season on soft ground; easily her best form was encouragingly on her reappearance on good to firm at Wetherby (7f handicap) where she was in rear for the most part but led late on for a length success; further progress is by no means out of the question for yard that won this in 2018 and last year.
Spotlight: Has to rebound from a nothing run in the Nell Gwyn in April but perhaps it's better to judge her on 2yo form, which included a second to the brilliant Venetian Sun in the 6f Albany at this meeting and another fine run in a 7f Group 3; both those efforts were on good to firm and pedigree bodes well for this first step up to 1m; her profile isn't a million miles away from Soprano's who won this for the same connections two years ago; possibilities.
Spotlight: Went close in a Group 3 (7f, good) last season on only her second career start; no fireworks as yet this campaign when only sixth in the Nell Gwyn, nowhere in the 1,000 Guineas and a fading fifth from the front in a French Group 2 last time (1m, good); with limitations becoming exposed she's dropped into a handicap, but others are surely more progressive.
Spotlight: Not your typical six-race maiden as she had notable form last season, including a second behind Oaks runner-up Legacy Link and a close fifth in a Group 3; this season's defeats have come in races won by Gosden filly So Regal who is going places; proven on fast ground and no forlorn hope.
Spotlight: Frankel filly; best run was the second, on the round course here over 1m (good to firm) when splitting a subsequent Listed-placed filly and Lyrics Of Life; that was her only run in a hood, which was missing (as is the case here) when a disappointing favourite behind Harlequin Breeze at Leicester; if able to replicate that penultimate effort, she wouldn't be a lost cause off 8st 5lb.
Spotlight: Won her novice last season at Newmarket (7f, good to soft); never that dangerous but was running on when fifth in the Group 3 Fred Darling (7f, good) and it was back over 6f when unable to land any sort of blow in a Listed race last month; lightly raced filly in a top stable and pedigree suggests that this first crack at 1m should be beneficial; makes the shortlist.
Spotlight: French challenger who isn't the easiest to assess, having won twice (good/soft) at odds-on either side of finishing well held in a Group 3 at Deauville; the fact she's lightly raced and in top hands means she can't be discounted on handicap debut, and her half-sister Crenelle was third in this four years ago; stall 1 might not be the place to be.
Spotlight: Won her maiden at Leopardstown by 6l (1m, yielding to soft; runner-up beaten since and now 0-4); it's unwise to suggest that her limitations were exposed in an Oaks trial over further at Naas as that race never went entirely to plan; her very low draw could be troublesome but she's one of a bucketload in here capable of better.
Spotlight: Outclassed in a sales race in October but progressive otherwise and had plenty in hand when winning a Class 4 7f handicap under Alexandra Egan at Yarmouth in April (good to firm; 6lb lower); should win further races but opposable in this one.
Spotlight: Has had seven races but won two of her last three, 7f handicaps at Dundalk (AW; cheekpieces) and the Curragh (good; tongue tied); went up 5lb for the last of those (workmanlike in beating Green Carrera) and they claimed 5lb that day, so she has plenty more on her plate here.
Spotlight: Has gone 0-6 since winning her first two races last summer; competitive at Meydan earlier in the year but she was 250-1 for the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket and never counted; others are probably on better terms with the handicapper.
Spotlight: This 250,000euros yearling has come via the quiet roads to Ascot but she might be peaking at the right time having won as she liked at Southwell last month (1m maiden, AW); can't be ruled out.
Spotlight: Odds-on debut winner and the form of her narrow Listed win at Sandown (7f, good) reads all the better now; however, she went missing from July until finishing down the field at 28-1 in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, so there are concerns.
Spotlight: Made all in a 1m novice as a 2yo and very nearly did so in another; comfortably held in Listed races on her last two appearances, latterly when tongue tied and essentially disappointing at Newmarket (1m2f; first run on ground quicker than good); it asks a lot of her to bounce back in a race of this nature.
Spotlight: 0-4 since debut win and hasn't threatened to take a hand in Group 3 races on last two outings; absent for two months and doesn't look on that good a mark; Toby Moore's claim will at least help in that respect.
Spotlight: Another unexposed filly from a top yard and she cost 450,000gns; her only turf run was on soft ground on debut and she's looked a work in progress in winning two on the AW (1m/9.4f), last time at the expense of a subsequent winner; the potential is there to take a sizeable step forward in her first handicap.
Spotlight: Wins at 6f (good) and 1m (AW); only midfield in a 7f Group 3 Guineas trial and then beaten 6.5l into third in the 1m2f Listed Pretty Polly; this trip might be a better fit but she's hardly on the crest of a wave right now.
Spotlight: Close up behind Zooming in a novice race last season; ran well in her handicap (1m, good) on penultimate start but was only fourth and it was a small field she disposed of back in a novice at Leicester (good to firm; beat Crownright); it's difficult to envisage her being good enough.
Spotlight: Has had eight races and posted career win number four in Italy's 1,000 Guineas (good; narrowly); back down to earth in a Listed race at Goodwood where perhaps 1m2f proved a stretch; returns to what is probably her best trip but with a fairly exposed profile.
Spotlight: Dual 7f winner last season but got her comeuppance when tried at Group 3 and Listed level; sister to a 1m winner but she was a fader when beating one home over this far on handicap debut at Newbury a month ago.
Spotlight: Narrow winner of a Beverley maiden before finishing fifth on her handicap debut at Thirsk (1m, good); she may struggle to reverse those placings with Bintaziza who had excuses.
Spotlight: French-trained filly whose first two races were on the AW, winning by 3l on debut before well beaten in a Listed race; raised her profile when third in the Italian 1,000 Guineas (good) and she came from further back than the winner Just Call Me Angel; this still looks a big ask on what she's shown thus far.
