A motorsport over 100 years old, motorcycle speedway (usually just called speedway), was first raced in Australia back in 1923. It’s an international sport today that’s popular across the globe, especially in the UK, Germany, Poland, Australia, Sweden and Denmark.
Most speedway races see four to six riders competing across four, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit between 260 and 425 metres long. With riders reaching speeds of up to 70 mph and more, races are fast and usually completed in little over one minute. This makes for fast-paced, exciting contests.
With its short and intense races, quick results and races held regularly across the world, speedway is an ideal motorsport for betting. With our speedway betting markets and speedway odds, you’ll find everything you need to bet on speedway.
How Does Speedway Betting Work at BoyleSports?
You’ll find speedway betting options right here on this page for the top upcoming international speedway events.
Click on a speedway meeting you’re interested in above, then find a race you want to bet on. You’ll see the riders competing in that race – usually four, but sometimes five or six. Next to each rider you’ll see their odds to win.
You’ll also see a range of bets offered for races, including:
● Race Winner: Bet on a rider to win that race.
● Podium Finish: Bet on a rider to finish in the top three.
● Outright Winner: Place an outright Speedway bet on a rider to win an entire tournament or league.
● Head-to-Head: Bet on which rider will win out of a specific pair of riders.
To place a bet, click on the odds of the rider you want to bet on to add that bet to your betslip at the right of the page. Add your stake (the amount you want to bet) in the box next to each bet on your betslip to complete each bet. You’ll see your Total Stake at the bottom of your betslip, which is the total amount you’ve staked across all your bets. You’ll also see your Total Potential Return – the overall amount you’ll win if all your bets are successful. Click on the button below to place the bets on your betslip.
At BoyleSports, you’ll also find betting markets for virtual speedway racing, with races determined randomly and available to watch in real-time.
Pole Position in Speedway Betting
Just as with other motorsports, which rider has pole position is an important consideration in speedway betting. However, unlike most other motorsports, pole position doesn’t mean a rider starts higher up the grid. It means they begin the race from Gate 1, which is the position closest to the inside of the track.
Pole position in speedway offers riders an advantage as they have less distance to travel to reach the first turn. They can take a tighter line into that first bend, giving them every opportunity to get out in front and secure an early lead.
On most speedway tracks, riders starting in pole position have higher win rates, often as high as 35% to 40%. Because of this, riders starting from Gate 1 often have shorter odds compared to riders at other gates, especially on tracks where the inside gate has historically provided a significant edge. A rider in good form starting at Gate 1 might be a good safe bet, whilst an underdog in pole position might offer better value than the race favourite.
In some speedway events, especially in team competitions, gate positions are determined randomly before the race. In other speedway meetings, often in individual events, gate positions are based on results in heats or earlier qualifying rounds.
Second Place in Speedway Betting
In speedway betting, second place often presents a strong betting opportunity because the odds for finishing second are typically lower than the odds for winning, but still offer good value.
In speedway championships, consistency is often more important than outright wins when it comes to securing the overall title. Riders who frequently finish in second place – even if they don’t win every race – can still accumulate enough points to win the championship. When making outright bets on the results of championships, keep your eye on riders who consistently place on the podium, as well as the frequent race winners.
Coupled with betting on second place, each-way betting is a popular bet to make in speedway. An each-way bet is two bets combined – a bet on a rider to win and a bet on that same rider to place (to finish 1st, 2nd, or 3rd). Your stake is split evenly between these two bets. If the rider wins, both the win and place bets pay out. If the rider finishes second or third, only the place bet pays out, and at lower odds.
Heats in Speedway Betting
Heats are the basic building blocks of speedway events, with a meeting usually consisting of multiple heats – often 15. In team competitions, riders earn points for their team based on their finishing positions. Whilst in individual competitions, the points earned contribute to their overall standing in the event or championship.
Betting on heat winners is a popular bet in speedway, as heats are fast and frequent and offer plenty of betting opportunities with quick results. Most heats see four riders competing, meaning you’ve got a simple choice to make when you bet on each heat.
Keep a close eye on each rider’s performance in heats, as form on the day in earlier rounds can be a good predictor of performance in later races. An underdog on a run of good form may be a great value bet in later rounds.

Team Factors in Speedway Betting
Team events are popular in speedway, as is betting on team competitions – both on the performance of teams and on the individual riders in them. For team events, you’ll see speedway betting markets covering the individual riders competing in each heat, but also the results of the overall teams.
Whilst the success of a team will depend on the collective efforts of its riders, the performance of a team as a whole can also impact individual riders and race outcomes. Look out for teams on a run of good form, and riders within them with longer odds – these are potentially valuable bets.
